A TREND I PREDICTED: THE END OF THE MAX CUSHION APOCALYPSE
The max cushion apocalypse has finally come to an end. I called it at the start of the year. The platforms, the Croc, the Hoka of it all, things are about to get a lot more primal as we seek to connect to the earth, each otherβ¦anything.Β
As the tabi goes mainstream, the finger shoe is the fashion girlies' next frontier. The adoption of functional footwear is nothing new, Solomons are seen throughout the city and Timbs were once only a work boot, but my enthusiasm (read: obsession) for a finger shoe comes from the normalisation of technical terms in fashion comms and how some consumers actively look for them - Gore-Tex and Vibram being the two I see most frequently.
A POST THAT MADE ME FEEL HOPEFUL: A BIG PLATTER OF PEAS
What do Run Clubs, Big Platters of Peas (credit: @naiarasabandar) and Sheet Wedding Cakes have in common? You guessed it, Family Style Connection (or school dinner time).Β
Post-covid, a small plates pandemic swept the nation, forcing us all to share but to still somehow leave a meal unfulfilled. Meal times are one the key moments in which we build community with others and yet someone decided to add a layer of separation to what could have been a bonding experience, by swapping out meals for glorified picky bits. Much like running is to run clubs, eating a meal is something we can do alone but the experience is enhanced when we do it with other people. The ceremony of all having a slice of a single tier cake that's an elevated execution of what your mum used to make creates a shared core memory. Lining up to collect your scoop of peas knowing that everyones being served the same is democratic, you can see the impact your presence is having on the event.Β
In a world of stuffy influencer dinners, we need more palettes of peas for earned social content to cut through. In the above example, Iβm left wondering - why is the platter of peas so big? Oh they're real peas.. oh this was an event.. It looks cool.. Iβm cool.. Who hosted the event? P.s. I'm accepting all invitations to events with pea platters.
A HOT TAKE FROM ME: THE CAPRIS TO SKINNY JEANS PIPELINE
ASOS are now regularly selling out of capris and you donβt think skinny jeans will come back? Grow Up. The IT girls are already on it, see here Olivia Neill fans begging and pleading for her to not make skinny jeans a thing after sheβs spotted wearing a pair in a few recent TikToks. However I fear they may have fallen victim to a fashionable scam, as Style Analytics recently pointed out, βskinny jeans were trending on Google (showing that people are searching for if skinny jeans are a trend), TikTok (showing that people are discussing the trend and some outfit inspo), but not Pinterest β where people, most importantly, look for outfit inspiration.β
Β For influencers, both the SEO gains and light hearted controversy that throwing on a pair of skinny jeans can bring is way too attractive to ignore. With the likely outcome of being referenced in TikToks from fans and fashion creators, itβd be silly not to squeeze into a pair once or twice. Or with the Ozempic heroin chic of it all, will the skinny jean return as a status symbol for the IT girls only? A signal of both defiance and conformity? Stay tuned to find out.
A POST THAT REMINDED ME SOCIAL MEDIA JUST ISNβT THAT DEEP:
Going viral, how hard could it be? Every now and then I love a reminder that social media is not that deep. From vocal warm ups to boots and a slick back bun, the best content is fun.Β
Β What's so catchy about these types of content is the ability for the meme to live on through recreation; we can all add our own flare with little to no skill. These memes have a short shelf life so casual creators are able to throw something up without worrying about brand guidelines or making a case as to why it's cool. There's even scope for spin off content, like the recent explosion of ranking the number combos and its many recreations - 45678 on the up is the elite combo, obviously?
